Pets
My wife and I don't have any kids (yet) but we do have 2 dogs and we used to have a snake.
Medusa
We got the snake first (Spring 1997). She is a 10 foot long Columbian Red Tail Boa Constrictor and her name is Medusa (appropriate name for a snake, don't you think?). She is very low maintenance and only needs to be fed about once a week in the summer and she doesn't eat at all from about Thanksgiving thru the first of April (she goes into a state of "pseudo-hybernation" in the winter). She used to eat live rats but as she got bigger, I had a harder time finding rats that would satisfy her. No I don't go looking in the sewers or something for them, I buy them at the pet store!! When I switched her over to frozen rats I was able to get some really big ones. I'd just thaw them out and toss 'em in the cage. I wouldn't have thought she'd eat a dead rat but I teased her with the first one (dragging it arround her cage by the tail so she'd think it was alive) and it worked. In case you're wondering, she swallows them whole.
Unfortunately, we had to give her up in the summer of 2002 because we weren't able to handle her regularly and she had become agressive. We did make sure she went to a good home though.
Here are a few pictures of her:
Enyo
In February of 2000 we got our first dog. She is a mutt that we picked up at the Cobb County Humane Society and her name is Enyo (Greek goddess of war). She was only 6 weeks old and 4.2 lbs when we got her but she's full grown now (about 55 lbs). She's solid black and has a white five-point star on her chest. She also doesn't have a tail. Enyo and all her siblings at the pound had already had their tails docked (why they did this, we'll never know). The funny thing about her is her ears. When she's tired, they droop down but when she's wide awake, they stick up so much that they touch at the tips so it looks like a "mono-ear"! She's a really well behaved dog and a VERY fast runner. Even though she's full grown now, she's still quite playful and even goes into a "turbo-puppy" mode from time to time where she will run (very fast) up and down the hall, arround the couch, back down the hall, etc. She can be a real spaz at times but she's a lot of fun!

Zeus
We spent about 2 years looking for a rotweiler before we found a good, reputable breeder (not a puppy mill). We got Zeus on May 6, 2001 when he was 8 weeks old and about 14 lbs. He's a very high quality dog and has 20+ championships listed on his pedigree (although we're not interested in taking him to dog shows, we just wanted him as a pet). He's full grown now (about 125 lbs.)and he and Enyo have LOTS of fun playing together. Enyo is still the dominant one (she was there first, after all) but he does manage to give her a hard time some times. Mostly they just act exactly as you'd expect siblings to. They play hard (tug-o-war is their favorite) when they're energetic and they sleep together when they're tired.
